The Plough – Chapter 57

From now on, without my permission, you are not to injure it again.
“Chen Wendong wants to kill you.”

Ling Shu read out the phrase and then looked up.

“Kill who? Kill me? Kill you?”

“I was the one who got the paper this morning and brought it here.” Yue Dingtang said.

Without waiting for Ling Shu to ask, he already began to explain the details of this morning and how he came to pick up the paper.
“I left home early this morning and didn’t eat breakfast at home so on the way to work I stopped off to get the morning paper, and then went to a street vendor for breakfast and had soy milk and deep fried dough cake. I put the paper down on the table, I was sharing the table with someone who was already there, after I finished, I took the paper away with me.”

In a public place, it’s very easy to slip someone a note – the paperboy, the stall vendor, the customer at a table, or even a passerby – it’s impossible to find out who did it.

Ling Shu: “They should be wanting to kill me.”

Yue Dingtang frowned and began to become suspicious.

Ling Shu: “A few days ago, Chen Wendong went looking for Jiang He and wanted to put a hit out on me.”

Yue Dingtang: “Did Jiang He tell you that? You and him are complete strangers, why would he suddenly tell you that?”

Ling Shu blinked.
Yue Dingtang understood: “So you did get up to no good.”

Ling Shu: ……..

Ling Shu felt more wronged than Dou E1Expression comes from the Chinese opera The Injustice to Dou E.

From He Youan to Jiang He, he wasn’t the one that initiated contact, how could Yue Dingtang say that he’d gone to look for trouble?

Originally, Ling Shu hadn’t wanted to mention the incident with Jiang He being chased by hitmen hired by Lu Tongcang, but he had no choice but to lay everything out on the table at this point.

As expected, the more Yue Dingtang listened, the more he frowned until his forehead and eyebrows were completely scrunched together. The way he was looking at Ling Shu was like the way he’d look at a student who had handed in a terrible assignment paper and would never pass. The only thing that was missing on his face were the words: Rotten wood cannot be carved2朽木不可雕 Chinese saying, English equivalent: you can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. Lit. you cannot make something good out of something that is naturally bad.

“I thought that after the situation with Shen Shiqi, perhaps you would smarten up a bit and not stick your nose into where it doesn’t belong.”

Ling Shu objected: “But with the addition of Jiang He, there are many things that make sense, we are no longer completely in the dark.”

Thinking about it, it was indeed impulsive to follow Jiang He that day and rush to his rescue.

However, the development of He Youan’s case had been impossible to solve, and far more complicated than the Yuan Manor case. And to this day, Ling Shu and Yue Dingtang, still did not know whether He Youan was good or bad, whether she was black or white, and what role she played in the case.

Jiang He was a breakthrough point.

And he had in reality given Ling Shu many new clues.

Considering these two points, it seemed to outweigh the cons.

Yue Dingtang said coldly: “Is it worth giving up your life to get a few new clues?”

Ling Shu smiled mischievously: “Well, Yue Sir, aren’t you still around? Jiang He would still have to give you some face3面子 miànzi – in this case ‘respect’.”
Yue Dingtang: “If you hadn’t been able to get away that day, have you thought about what would have happened after?”

Ling Shu: “Yes.”

Yue Dingtang frowned, waiting for him to express remorse.

Ling Shu: “Regarding my sister and brother-in-law, seeing that we are old classmates, you’d definitely help me to take care of them. The most pitiful thing would be not being able to eat another meal made by Chunxiao-jie. In addition, since I have been promoted, I haven’t even received my first month’s salary yet before being heroically sacrificed. This is exactly the same as queueing up for hours for tickets and then reaching the ticket booth for them to say that it is now closed.”

Regret is regret, but the focal point was completely different.

Yue Dingtang sneered, he was about to come out with a few mocking remarks but then his gaze suddenly fixed on Ling Shu.

“Are you hurt?”

Ling Shu: “No.”

Yue Dingtang: “Then pick up the desklamp on your table.”

Ling Shu reached out his hand.

Yue Dingtang said coldly: “Use your right hand.”

Ling Shu stared blankly: “I told you before that I injured my right hand and I can’t lift anything heavy.”

Yue Dingtang: “This lamp can’t be considered heavy, one hand is more than enough to lift it, and previously, I’ve even seen you pick up a brick.”

Ling Shu could only go and pick up the lamp with his right hand.

He exerted force from his arm, clearly stiffening up, and even trembling slightly.

“Enough.”

Yue Dingtang took the lamp from him and put it back on the table.

“Take your jacket off.”

Ling Shu: “Yue Sir, what you’re asking is a bit weird.”

Yue Dingtang squinted a little: “Are you going to take it off or not?”

His eyes were as sharp as a blade, as if he was able to slice open his clothes to reveal the truth.

It seemed that it was impossible to conceal it anymore.

Ling Shu sighed a little and then took off his jacket.

Yue Dingtang went and personally rolled up Ling Shu’s sleeve!

Stemming the wrist up to the elbow, a large bruise came into view.

Even though it was what Yue Dingtang had already expected, his eyelids couldn’t help twitching.

“I didn’t get shot, just got hurt, I injured my hand a bit.”

Ling Shu wasn’t sure how Yue Dingtang had such a keen eye. Yue Dingtang discovered the injury that even Jiang He hadn’t detected.

Yue Dingtang: “Your right hand is already half-crippled, do you want to be completely handicapped? If you don’t want it, I will get someone to chop it off now so you don’t keep injuring it time after time.”

Ling Shu smiled apologetically: “This time, I went to the party, so I didn’t carry a gun, or I wouldn’t be so non-reactive, I’ll definitely be more careful next time! ”

Yue Dingtang said coldly: “How did you get hurt?”

Ling Shu: “When Jiang He was passed out and couldn’t help me. There were three people in pursuit of us, one of them was injured and got beaten up by me. The other two pursued us relentlessly, I was about to beat one of them to death, when the other one took a shot at me when I wasn’t focused and he kicked me in the wrist.

Yue Dingtang: “Are you sure they didn’t recognise you?”
Ling Shu itched his nose: “I don’t think so.”

Yue Dingtang was unwilling to let things go, and was just as overbearing as usual.

“Do you know what Jiang He has been upto these days? Lu Tongcang married a third concubine, Jiang He was helping to attend to the wedding guests, Lu Tongcang wanted to make it a huge fanfare, so Jiang He invited the famous masters of the Beijing Opera and movie stars including He Youan to attend. Just because you saved his life, do you think Jiang He will allow you to live? A snake like him who is ruthless, selfish and self-motivated. If he wants to prove his loyalty to Lu Tongcang, he’ll be the first in line to come and kill you!”

“You’re right, I won’t see him again, let’s resolve the matter in hand first!”

Ling Shu treated the other like he was placating a donkey4顺毛驴 [shùnmáolǘ] basically – to conform to his ideas to make him happy, he said that without thinking and then quickly tried to change the subject.

“Who do you think is trying to tell me that Chen Wendong wants to kill me?”

Yue Dingtang was silent for a while: “He Youan.”

Ling Shu: “Then why doesn’t she just tell me?”

Yue Dingtang: “It’s not convenient for her.”

Is someone stopping her, so she is indirectly calling for help, or is it the thief calling out “stop the thief”5贼喊捉贼 zéi hǎn zhuōzéi fig. to accuse somebody of a theft and try to sneak away oneself; to cover up one’s misdeeds by shifting the blame onto others, and everything is just a smokescreen?

Ling Shu sighed.

“Twists and turns, a plot within a plot, I am starting to regret getting involved with her.”

Yue Dingtang said mockingly: “I thought that you’d think like that when you offended Shen Shiqi.”

Ling Shu sneered: “At that time I believed myself to be the handsome gentleman saving the beauty, but I never would have thought that the beauty would turn out to be a beautiful snake demon!”

Yue Dingtang didn’t reply, he got up and took a bottle of medicine from the cupboard.

Ling Shu was getting ready to put his jacket back on, upon seeing this, he quickly said: “I’ve already rubbed on someone medicine, it looks serious but in reality, there is no internal injury.”

Yue Dingtang looked at him.

Three seconds.

Ling Shu retreated.

He gave up and took off his outer layer again, rolling up his sleeves, he put on a brave face and then stuck out his arm, allowing Yue Dingtang to do as wished.

Yue Dingtang’s hand was very warm, but when he was using quite a bit of force on his arm it did not feel particularly comfortable.

Ling Shu resisted the urge to howl out in pain, and turned the howling into a low groan.

“If you really don’t want this arm anymore, then give it to me. From now on, without my permission, you are not to injure it again.”

That’s what he heard Yue Dingtang say.
